Join the editors and essayists of Thoreau & Philosophy for a conversation exploring Thoreau as one of America’s most profound philosophical thinkers. Beyond his literary and naturalist legacy, Thoreau’s work engages philosophical questions that remain deeply relevant today, shaping conversations about ethics, freedom, society, and the environment. Together, the panelists share how situating Thoreau in a philosophical context allows one to more fully appreciate the depth of his thought.

 

Dr. Marc Jolley (Ph.D. in Hebrew and Jewish Wisdom Literature) is senior lecturer of Philosophy at Mercer University and has taught Great Books and INT. His areas of teaching philosophy include ethics, religion, film, and literature, and he is involved with the ethics minor. His personal focus is on character, and he reads extensively in Thoreau, Emerson, Plato, Dante, and Kierkegaard. He has assisted in study abroad trips to Athens, Greece, and to Florence, Italy. He is also the director of Mercer University Press and a member of the board of the Thoreau Alliance.

David H. Gordon is Associate Teaching Professor of Philosophy at Loyola University Maryland. He serves on the board of the Thoreau Alliance and is the author of The Implications of Evolution for Metaphysics. Over the past two decades, he has taught more than 180 courses spanning environmental philosophy, ethics, philosophy of biology, logic, religion, and the history of philosophy. His research examines the philosophical implications of evolutionary biology, particularly for metaphysics, religion, and environmental ethics, with a broader interest in the nature and practice of philosophy itself. His work reflects a deep engagement with questions of wilderness preservation, biodiversity, sustainability, and the traditions of both Western and Eastern philosophical thought.
