SUMMARY:Thoreau and Philosophy: A Panel of Essayists
DESCRIPTION:Register for in-person or virtual attendance\n  \nJoin the editors and essayists of Thoreau & Philosophy for a conversation exploring Thoreau as one of America’s most profound philosophical thinkers. Beyond his literary and naturalist legacy\, Thoreau’s work engages philosophical questions that remain deeply relevant today\, shaping conversations about ethics\, freedom\, society\, and the environment. His areas of teaching philosophy include ethics\, religion\, film\, and literature\, and he is involved with the ethics minor. His personal focus is on character\, and he reads extensively in Thoreau\, Emerson\, Plato\, Dante\, and Kierkegaard. He has assisted in study abroad trips to Athens\, Greece\, and to Florence\, Italy. He is also the director of Mercer University Press and a member of the board of the Thoreau Alliance. \n  \n\n\nDavid Gordon is Associate Teaching Professor of Philosophy at Loyola University Maryland\, specializing in the History of Philosophy\, Environmental Philosophy\, Applied Ethics\, and the relationship between science and religion. He serves on the board of the Thoreau Society as well as the Maryland chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation.  He is the author of The Implications of Evolution for Metaphysics\, and co-editor with Marc Jolley of the newly released Thoreau and Philosophy. \n\n\n\n\n\nWilliam Homestead is an interdisciplinary scholar\, writer\, and longtime college educator. He is the author of An Ecology of Communication: Response and Responsibility in an Age of Ecocrisis (2021) and Not Till We Are Lost: Thoreau\, Education\, and Climate Crisis (2024)\, which was a finalist for the Vermont Book Award in Creative Nonfiction. He is the editor of The Active Soul: Emerson and Thoreau on Reform and Civil Disobedience (2025). The Active Soul includes his 36-page introduction\, “From Abolitionism to Climate Justice.”\n\n\n\n\nBrent Ranalli is a New England historian who has written about Thoreau’s  Native American interests\, his virtue ethics and political philosophy\, his walking gait\, and other topics ranging from laundry to PTSD to participation in the Concord militia. He edits the Thoreau Society Bulletin.\n\n\n\n\n Register\n\nThis program is co-sponsored by the Concord Museum.
