SUMMARY:Thoreau’s Journal Drawings: A Conversation with Author Kathleen Kelly
DESCRIPTION:Register\n  \nJoin author Kathleen Kelly for a discussion of her new book Thoreau’s Journal Drawings: The Power of the Visual for in-depth exploration of one of the most overlooked—and most fascinating—aspects of Henry David Thoreau’s work. Beginning in 1850\, Thoreau started sketching everything from hedgehog quills and locust wings to goldenrod leaves\, using drawing alongside writing as a way to sharpen his powers of observation and deepen his understanding of the natural world. \nDrawing on her groundbreaking research\, Kelly reveals how these seemingly modest sketches were far more than illustrations. They were an essential part of Thoreau’s creative and scientific practice\, where words and images worked together to record\, interpret\, and make sense of the world around him. By placing Thoreau’s illustrated journal entries within the broader traditions of nineteenth-century scientific illustration\, nature writing\, and visual culture\, she offers fresh insight into his methods and the remarkable ways he learned to see. \nThrough close readings of illustrated journal passages\, this program uncovers a vital dimension of Thoreau’s work that has long been overlooked. Whether you’re a devoted Thoreau reader\, an artist\, a naturalist\, or simply curious about the intersection of art and science\, you’ll come away with a richer appreciation for how drawing helped shape one of America’s greatest observers of the natural world. \nThis program is free to attend in-person. It will not be livestreamed. A recording of the program will be made available. \nThis event is presented in cooperation with Concord Art as part of the Concord Festival of Authors. \n \n  \n  \n  \n \n  \n  \n  \n Register

SUMMARY:The Walden Experiments: A Book Talk with Robert M. Thorson
DESCRIPTION:Register\nPlease join us for an evening with Professor Robert M. Thorson: a public lecture with readings\, followed by Q&A and book signing\, for his forthcoming book\, The Walden Experiments: The Science of Henry David Thoreau\, to be published in September 2026 by Princeton University Press. \n“Henry David Thoreau’s Walden stands as the foundational text for the environmental movement and as a model for the practice of nature writing. In The Walden Experiments\, Robert Thorson tells the story of how\, after several discarded drafts of social critique\, Thoreau resuscitated Walden with a sharp swerve toward science. Thorson invites us to read—or reread—Walden to discover the observations\, empirical thinking\, and scientific explanations supporting this canonical work of literature. Chapter by chapter\, he guides us through Walden’s relevance for such contemporary scientific concerns as climate change\, ecological collapse\, water supply\, agriculture\, artificial intelligence\, and technology. \nThoreau’s first “experiment” of living deliberately took place in a one-room house at Walden Pond from 1845 to 1847. This was followed from 1851 to 1852 by a little-known second experiment of trying to live deliberately in the midst of society as a sojourning scientist. Thorson’s account of a science-revitalized version of Walden helps us appreciate Thoreau’s masterpiece not only for its prophetic\, lyrical\, uplifting\, witty\, and timeless advice on living sustainably\, but also as a historic benchmark for anchoring our modern solutions. Exploring the science that underlies Walden enhances our understanding of the deeper meanings Thoreau draws from nature.” – Princeton University Press \n“No Thoreau scholar has a more commanding grasp than Robert Thorson of the significance of Thoreau’s contributions to the history of nineteenth century and modern science in all its branches.”— Lawrence Buell\, author of The Environmental Imagination: Thoreau\, Nature Writing\, and the Making of American Culture and Henry David Thoreau: Thinking Disobediently. \n“No writer has ever better combined a social critique with a scientific underpinning; as this fine account makes clear\, Thoreau was not just ahead of his time but of our time too. A remarkable reintroduction to the classic American book!”— Bill McKibben\, author of The End of Nature and Here Comes the Sun. \n  \nRobert M. Thorson is professor of Earth sciences at the University of Connecticut. He is the author of Walden’s Shore: Henry David Thoreau and Nineteenth-Century Science\, The Boatman: Henry David Thoreau’s River Years\, and The Guide to Walden Pond. \n  \n\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by The Concord Free Public Library and The Walden Woods Project.\n\n Register
