SUMMARY:Joel Myerson Annual Lecture Presented by Professor Daniel Shealy
DESCRIPTION:Learn More and Register\n  \nPlease join us for the annual Joel Myerson Lecture: “‘I turn my adventures into bread and butter ‘: Louisa May Alcott’s European Grand Tour\,” presented by Professor Daniel Shealy. \nDaniel Shealy is Professor of English at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte\, where he teaches American literature. He has published thirteen books on Louisa May Alcott\, including co-editing The Selected Letters of Louisa May Alcott and The Journal of Louisa May Alcott with Joel Myerson. He also edited Little Women: An Annotated Edition\, published by Harvard University Press. His most recent book\, Little Women at 150\, was published in 2022. His forthcoming book\, Louisa May Alcott in Europe: Shawl Straps and Other Stories\, will be published by Mercer University Press in 2027. \nTHE JOEL MYERSON ANNUAL LECTURE SERIES \nAfter Prof. Joel Myerson died in 2021\, the William Munroe Special Collections at the Concord Free Public Library\, along with representatives from the Louisa May Alcott Society\, Margaret Fuller Society\, The Ralph Waldo Emerson Society\, and The Thoreau Society\, launched the Joel Myerson Annual Lecture Series. \nThe Joel Myerson Annual Lecture Series will engage the public in the study of American literature and literary history\, focusing on writers associated with Concord\, Massachusetts\, and American Transcendentalism\, with an interdisciplinary outlook. The series will highlight the work and ideas of emergent scholarship\, drawing on the values Myerson personified as a generous mentor\, teacher\, and public speaker and amplifying the diversity of representation that Joel Myerson exemplified in his textual scholarship and editorial initiatives. The series will promote lifelong learning and the recovery of primary source materials that teach us about the future as well as the past—beginning in Concord and radiating outward to American literature and culture as a means to engage with current events\, conservation\, and reform. \nA reception will follow the event in the Rotunda. \nThe Concord Free Public Library Corporation generously sponsors the series. \n  \nThis program will also be livestreamed. SUMMARY:The Walden Experiments: A Book Talk with Robert M. Thorson
DESCRIPTION:Register\nPlease join us for an evening with Professor Robert M. Thorson: a public lecture with readings\, followed by Q&A and book signing\, for his forthcoming book\, The Walden Experiments: The Science of Henry David Thoreau\, to be published in September 2026 by Princeton University Press. \n“Henry David Thoreau’s Walden stands as the foundational text for the environmental movement and as a model for the practice of nature writing. In The Walden Experiments\, Robert Thorson tells the story of how\, after several discarded drafts of social critique\, Thoreau resuscitated Walden with a sharp swerve toward science. Thorson invites us to read—or reread—Walden to discover the observations\, empirical thinking\, and scientific explanations supporting this canonical work of literature. Chapter by chapter\, he guides us through Walden’s relevance for such contemporary scientific concerns as climate change\, ecological collapse\, water supply\, agriculture\, artificial intelligence\, and technology. \nThoreau’s first “experiment” of living deliberately took place in a one-room house at Walden Pond from 1845 to 1847. This was followed from 1851 to 1852 by a little-known second experiment of trying to live deliberately in the midst of society as a sojourning scientist. Thorson’s account of a science-revitalized version of Walden helps us appreciate Thoreau’s masterpiece not only for its prophetic\, lyrical\, uplifting\, witty\, and timeless advice on living sustainably\, but also as a historic benchmark for anchoring our modern solutions. Exploring the science that underlies Walden enhances our understanding of the deeper meanings Thoreau draws from nature.” – Princeton University Press \n“No Thoreau scholar has a more commanding grasp than Robert Thorson of the significance of Thoreau’s contributions to the history of nineteenth century and modern science in all its branches.”— Lawrence Buell\, author of The Environmental Imagination: Thoreau\, Nature Writing\, and the Making of American Culture and Henry David Thoreau: Thinking Disobediently. \n“No writer has ever better combined a social critique with a scientific underpinning; as this fine account makes clear\, Thoreau was not just ahead of his time but of our time too. A remarkable reintroduction to the classic American book!”— Bill McKibben\, author of The End of Nature and Here Comes the Sun. \n  \nRobert M. Thorson is professor of Earth sciences at the University of Connecticut. He is the author of Walden’s Shore: Henry David Thoreau and Nineteenth-Century Science\, The Boatman: Henry David Thoreau’s River Years\, and The Guide to Walden Pond. \n  \n\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by The Concord Free Public Library and The Walden Woods Project.\n\n Register
